Sunday, 11th January 2015 a protest march was held in Sebes, the county of Alba where over 2500 people attended. The citizens ask the Romanian Government to give the approved and authorized equipment to the National Guard of Environment of Alba in order to monitor the economical agents with a potential degree of pollution. The march began at 14:00 in front of Sebes city hall where the organizers spoke and the march participants walked in an organized manner through the streets of Sebeş: Parcul Primăriei – Cartier Aleea Parc – Cartier Valea Frumoasei – Cartier Kogălniceanu – Kronospan parking and ended at about 17:00. To the manifest took part also activists from Reghin and Cluj Napoca. The inhabitants from Reghin are opposing to the plans of a Turkish company that wants to build a production plant of formaldehyde with a capacity of over 100.000 T /year.
In România formaldehyde is produced in 3 locations at this moment: Victoria, Sebeş and Rădăuţi. From these factories, only the one from Sebes is situated inside the city. Many inhabitants of the city, especially those from the immediate vicinity of the plant, are accusing the worsening of their health condition and an increase of the number of cancer cases and cancer of the respiratory tract cases are observed. Formaldehyde is classified by the European legislation as a carcinogen (regulation 605/2014).
The participants have announced that they will come every Sunday until their demands will be taken into consideration.
