The protests against pollution with toxic substances, including formaldehyde, have continued on Sunday, 18th of January, in Sebeș. The dissatisfied citizens went out again on the street, marching in the city, from the City Hall Park until they arrived in front of the Kronospan factory. The citizens denounce to the authorities to take urgent measures against the pollution in the city of Sebeş through the relocation of the factory outside the city, away to at least 50 km from any inhabited area of the county. The protests come as a consequence of the announcement made by the austrian company according to which the company want to extend their activity through putting in function of a new instalation to produce formaldehyde. In this sense, Kronospan has purchased a second hand instalation from France, with a production capacity of 60.000 t/year. The plans of the company come in the context in which Kronospan does not have modern equipment for measuring the exact cuantity of formaldehyde emitted in the nature.
As a result to the first march of protest held on January 11th 2015, to which over 2500 people took part, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests suspended the procedure to give the environment authorization to SC Kronospan Sebeş SA until the contestations brought by two local associations: PrimaNatura and Centru Independent de Protecţie a Mediului Sebeş are clarified.
The solidarity manifestations towards the protests in Sebes have extended both in the country and in Diaspora, as well as in other countries where Kronospan has working points. Support events have been organized in front of the Ministry of Environment in Bucharest, in Cluj Napoca, Reghin, Brașov, Timișoara, Deva, Sibiu but also in Mississauga, Ontario (Canada), Alcala de Henares (Spania), Wurzburg (Germania) or Ufa (Rusia).
